Progress in cancer strategy implementation: roadmap accepted by steering group and decision made on the establishment of the Finnish National Cancer Mission Hub

Published 17.6.2026

In its meeting on the 15th of June, the steering group for national cancer strategy implementation accepted the cancer strategy’s implementation roadmap to be submitted to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The group also decided on the establishment of the Finnish National Cancer Mission Hub, with the aim of strengthening cancer field collaboration and supporting the implementation of the cancer strategy.

The roadmap directs the practical implementation of the strategy

The implementation roadmap goes into more detail on the strategy’s proposed action points, their schedules, responsible actors and estimates of necessary resources. In addition, the roadmap describes perspectives of equity through six cross-cutting themes, covering socioeconomic factors, regional inequalities, rare cancers and hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes, childhood and adolescent cancers, poor prognosis cancers and the elderly.

The implementation roadmap was accepted by the steering group and will now progress to preparations for publishing.

The Finnish National Cancer Mission Hub brings actors from the cancer field together

In its meeting, the steering group also decided on the establishment of the Finnish National Cancer Mission Hub. The hub aims to strengthen collaboration, dialogue and shared action among all actors in the cancer field (decision makers, authorities, healthcare workers, researchers, patients and citizens, companies), as well as advance people-centered cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and overall quality of life through research and innovation. The Finnish National Cancer Mission Hub will act as a forum for fostering shared discussions and support the implementation of the national cancer strategy.

During the spring of 2026, FICAN organized discussions with different cancer field actors with the aim of generating ideas for the activities of the Finnish Cancer Mission Hub. FICAN will act as the coordinative entity of the hub, and share more information on the concrete starting of hub activities in the early fall.
